What the regional names mean

Each of these is a blessing for the mother and the baby, but the rituals, the timing and who attends vary from region to region and from family to family.

  • Godh bharai (North India): "filling the lap". Women of the family fill the mother's lap with fruits, coconut, dry fruits, sweets and gifts, and bless her. It is usually a gathering of women.
  • Seemantham (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, where it is also called seemantha, and among many Tamil families): from simantonnayana, one of the traditional samskaras, in which the parting of the mother's hair is part of the ritual. It is often done with a puja or homam.
  • Valaikappu (Tamil Nadu): "valai" means bangle. Married women slip glass bangles on the mother's wrists for protection and blessings. Many Tamil families hold it on the same day as the seemantham.
  • Dohale jevan (Maharashtra): "dohale" are a pregnant woman's cravings and "jevan" is a meal, so it is a feast of the foods she longs for. She is often dressed in a green saree with flower jewellery.
  • Other names: shaadh in Bengal and shrimant in Gujarat, among others.

Many families hold the ceremony in the seventh month, though some choose the fifth, eighth or ninth, and the date is often fixed with the family priest. Follow what your family does.
