What happens at an annaprashan
Annaprashan is one of the traditional Hindu samskaras, the first time a baby eats solid food. The details vary by region and family, but a few things are common.
- Timing: usually around six months. Many families choose an even month for a boy and an odd month for a girl, and the date and time are often fixed with the family priest.
- The first feed: a little rice, kheer, payesh or payasam, fed by a parent, grandparent or maternal uncle, depending on the family.
- Puja: many families begin with a puja at home or at a temple.
- A playful custom: in some families the baby is shown a tray of objects, such as a book, a pen or money, and everyone watches what the baby picks.
- A meal for the guests, often lunch.
What to write on an annaprashan invitation
- The name your family uses: annaprashan, mukhe bhaat, choroonu or rice ceremony.
- The baby's name, and who is inviting.
- Date, time and venue, and the temple if the ceremony is held there.

Make and send the invitation on Shubh
On Shubh you can make an annaprashan invitation with a painted theme, in English or in two languages side by side, such as English and Bengali or English and Malayalam, and send it on WhatsApp as a link that opens in the phone's browser. Guests need no app.
- Give the temple ceremony and the lunch at home their own time, venue and map pin.
- Guests tap RSVP and say how many adults and children are coming.
- If the time changes, the same link updates for everyone.
- Guests can add their photos to a shared photo wall after the day.
