What the regional names mean
Upanayana is one of the traditional Hindu samskaras, in which a boy receives the sacred thread, the yajnopavita, and is initiated into the Gayatri mantra to begin his studies. It is kept by Brahmin families and by some other communities, and the names differ by language.
- Upanayana or upanayanam: the Sanskrit name, used across India and most often in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.
- Poonal: the Tamil word for the sacred thread itself. Tamil families often call the ceremony the "poonal function", and the more formal name is upanayanam.
- Brahmopadesam: the initiation into the Gayatri mantra, the heart of the ceremony. South Indian invitations often write "upanayanam and brahmopadesam".
- Odugu: a Telugu name for the ceremony.
- Janeu or yagyopavit sanskar: used in Hindi-speaking North India; janeu is the thread.
- Munja or vratabandha: the Marathi names. Munja comes from munj, the grass used for the girdle the boy wears.
- Janoi in Gujarat and poite or upanayan in Bengal.
The age differs too. Many families hold it when the boy is between seven and sixteen, and some do it just before the wedding. The date and time are usually fixed with the family priest.
