What to include in a puja invitation

1. A blessing line, such as Shri Ganeshaya Namah, if your family uses one.
2. Who is inviting, and the reason for the puja if there is one.
3. Day, date and start time. The katha has five chapters and usually takes about an hour with aarti, though it varies with the pandit.
4. Address and a map, especially for a new home that guests have not visited.
5. What follows: prasad only, or a full lunch or dinner.
6. How to reply, so you can plan the prasad and food.

Satyanarayan puja customs to keep in mind

• Many families hold the puja on Purnima, the full moon day, but it can be done on any day the family or the pandit chooses.
• Guests are traditionally expected to stay for the katha and aarti, and to take prasad before leaving. Saying the start time clearly helps.
• Prasad differs by region: sheera in Maharashtra and Gujarat, panjiri and panchamrit in many North Indian homes, and other sweets elsewhere.
• Some families ask guests to come in traditional clothes or to keep the gathering vegetarian; mention it gently if it matters to you.
• Customs vary by family and region, so follow your elders and your pandit on the details.
