Gujarati wedding invitation wording: kankotri matter in Gujarati and English

· 5 min read

A Gujarati kankotri has its own warm rhythm: Shri Ganesh at the top, a bhavbharyu amantran to the whole family, every prasang from Ganesh sthapana to hast melap, and a playful tahuko from the children at the end. Here are 25 lines in Gujarati script, with the English meaning, to copy as they are or change for your family.

Opening and invitation lines

Most kankotris open with Shri Ganesh, then the hosts invite you and your whole family (sahkutumb). The groom's name takes ચિ. (chiranjeevi) and, traditionally, the bride's takes ચિ. સૌ. કાં. (chiranjeevi saubhagyakankshini); many families now write ચિ. for both.

In English, the traditional line reads: "By the grace of God, the wedding of our son Aarav has been fixed with Meera (daughter of Mrs. Hema and Mr. Nilesh Shah). We warmly invite you and your family to this auspicious occasion." The daughter's line ends: "We humbly request you and your family to come and bless the newlyweds."

Prasang lines: each function with its time

Each prasang (function) gets its own line, with the day, date and time. Kankotris often write the time with કલાકે (o'clock). The bride's side writes જાન આગમન (arrival of the jaan) where the groom's side writes જાન પ્રસ્થાન (departure).

Tahuko: the children's line

The tahuko is the line where the little ones of the family call guests to the wedding, with love and a little mischief. It is often the most read line on the card.

  • Come, or we'll sulk!

    મારા ભાઈના લગ્નમાં જરૂર જરૂર આવજો, નહીં તો અમે રિસાઈ જઈશું!
  • Come early, we'll do garba together

  • We'll be waiting for you

  • We'll dance a lot

    કાકાના લગ્નમાં ખૂબ નાચીશું, તમે પણ જરૂર આવજો!

English and WhatsApp messages

For friends, colleagues and the younger cousins, an English card or a Gujlish WhatsApp message works well beside the Gujarati kankotri.

  • English kankotri

  • WhatsApp, in Gujarati

  • WhatsApp, Gujlish

What the kankotri words mean

  • Kankotri (કંકોત્રી): the Gujarati wedding invitation card, also called lagna patrika. In many families the first kankotri is offered to Shri Ganesh or the kuldevi before any guest gets one. "Kankotri matter" simply means the text printed on it.
  • Ganesh sthapana: installing and worshipping Shri Ganesh at home at the start of the wedding rituals, so that everything goes without obstacles.
  • Mandap mahurat: the puja for raising the wedding mandap, held at an auspicious time (mahurat), usually a day or a few days before the wedding.
  • Pithi: the Gujarati haldi, where turmeric paste is applied to the bride or groom by family members.
  • Mameru: in many families the bride's maternal uncle's family brings clothes and gifts for her; it is often listed as its own prasang.
  • Jaan: the groom's wedding procession, like a baraat. The bride's family welcomes it at the venue.
  • Hast melap: the moment the couple's hands are joined during the wedding ceremony, often the time printed most prominently.
  • Tahuko: the children's invitation line at the end of the card. Literally, a peacock's call.

Customs differ between communities, for example Patel, Brahmin, Vania and Jain families, and between Saurashtra, Kutch and central Gujarat. Ask an elder which prasangs your family lists and how they are named.

Tips before you send

  • Write names the way the family writes them, with ભાઈ and બેન where they are used.
  • Give the day with the date: શુક્રવાર, તા. 12-02-2027 avoids confusion.
  • If your family lists the mahurat separately from the guests' arrival time, show both.
  • Ask someone who reads Gujarati well to check the spelling before you send it to everyone.
  • Add a dress code for the garba night and a parking note for the party plot.

Make a Gujarati kankotri on Shubh

Shubh has a Gujarati tradition with painted themes and regional music, and the card can be written in Gujarati, English, or both side by side. Each prasang gets its own date, time, venue with a map pin and dress code; you can invite some guests only to the garba or the reception, and guests tap RSVP for each function from the WhatsApp link with no app. One function is free; see pricing for more.
